Both use standardized tests, but they answer different questions. Psychological testing focuses on emotions, personality, behavior and learning, for example to diagnose anxiety, a learning disability or giftedness. A neuropsychological assessment looks more closely at specific thinking skills and how they relate to brain health, for example after a concussion, with epilepsy, or when memory is changing. Testing typically takes between three and eight hours of face-to-face time, depending on age and the questions being asked, and is often split over two appointments with breaks. A comprehensive assessment, including scoring, interpretation and the written report, usually totals 12 to 18 billable hours.
We are in network with Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, Optum, UMR, Oscar Health, MultiPlan, Medicare and VA Community Care. Neuropsychological testing is often covered when medically necessary, for example after a head injury or with a neurological condition. You are responsible for your deductible and copays. No. There are no needles or scans. Testing involves puzzles, questions, memory tasks and some computer or pencil-and-paper activities.
Get a good night’s sleep, eat beforehand, take your usual medications, and bring glasses, hearing aids and a list of medications. Bring any previous test results or medical records.
Testing can show whether memory and thinking are in the expected range for your age or suggest a change that needs further medical follow-up. We share results with your doctor with your permission.
