How common is ADHD?
About 7 million U.S. children ages 3 to 17 (roughly 1 in 9) have been diagnosed with ADHD, according to CDC data, and many adults were never assessed as children. Under DSM-5-TR, symptoms must have started before age 12, be present in two or more settings (such as home and school), and clearly interfere with daily functioning.
How long does ADHD testing take?
Most ADHD evaluations include an intake interview, one testing appointment of several hours and a feedback session. If we are also assessing learning, autism or mood, testing may be split across two visits. We give you a timeline at intake and can work toward deadlines such as college accommodation requests.
What your ADHD report includes
- A clear answer on whether ADHD is present, and which presentation (inattentive, hyperactive-impulsive or combined).
- Results for attention, working memory, processing speed and executive function.
- Whether anxiety, depression, sleep problems, learning disabilities or autism better explain some or all of the symptoms.
- Recommendations for school or workplace accommodations, therapy and coaching, and information your doctor can use when considering medication.
Cost and insurance
We are in network with Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, Optum, UMR, Oscar Health, MultiPlan, Medicare and VA Community Care. Be aware that many insurance plans do not cover evaluations for ADHD alone; broader psychological or neuropsychological testing may be covered when medically necessary. Child and adult ADHD testing is available at our Orlando, West Palm Beach and Palm Beach Gardens offices, Monday to Friday, 9:00am to 5:00pm.
ADHD testing FAQs
At what age can a child be tested for ADHD?
Children as young as 4 can be evaluated, although most are assessed once school demands make symptoms clearer. Teens and adults can be tested at any age.
Can adults be tested for ADHD?
Yes. Adult ADHD is common and often missed, especially in women and in people whose symptoms are mainly inattentive. We ask about childhood as well as current work and home life.
Will the evaluation prescribe medication?
No. We do not prescribe. We share results with your physician or psychiatrist, with your permission, so they can decide on medication.
Should my child stop ADHD medication before testing?
Do not change medication without talking to the prescribing doctor. Let us know what your child takes and we will advise on timing.
Can the report be used for college or testing accommodations?
Yes. Colleges and testing agencies usually want a recent, comprehensive evaluation, and we write reports with the detail they look for.
Could it be something other than ADHD?
Yes, and that is why a full evaluation matters. Anxiety, depression, sleep problems, learning disabilities, trauma and autism can all look like ADHD.
